Just facilitated a workshop session for about 30 people on Dealing with Difficult People. Went well – discussed information from Rich Brinkman’s book, Dealing with People You Can’t Stand. He discusses nine typical “behavior” styles that people can exhibit when “their intent” is not being met.
I’v used this material in the past – bottom line is I have four options:
- Change nothing (status quo)
- Change jobs (i’ve used this strategy before!)
- Change my attitude (simple concept, not so simple unless practiced daily)
- Change the way in which I communicate with that person.
The emphasis on #4 is change the way I communicate. Some may say it’s manipulative, in fact I would also say it’s manipulitave. But, if my result is to not be baraged by the difficult behavior – I can change the way I communicate with someone.
